Sonny’s Free Store set up at Wildflowers Armory
Sonny’s Free Store at the FAHNN Winter Market
Putting together bags for our Unhoused Community Members
What We Offer
Sonny’s Free Store is one of our longest running projects in Syracuse DSA. It’s named after one of our Mutual Aid Committee’s founding members, Sonny Fantacone, who we sadly lost in 2021. Free stores demonstrate the basics of what we as Democratic Socialists believe people and communities can do to provide for one another. If we are more willing to give of ourselves and our excess to our fellow humans instead of to landfills, then our society as a whole will prosper.
At our free store, people are welcome to browse, pull things off the shelves, try things on (we do not currently have any sort of changing room to offer, so keep this in mind), and otherwise check stuff out the same way you would in a thrift store. Once you’ve made your selections, you’ll come up to the front, we’ll count the items you’ve chosen so that we can keep track of our inventory, help you bag things up if you like (that’s right, we even offer bags when we have them!), and then you’re free to go! No paying, no catches! The only thing we ask is that if you love the store, let other people know about it! And if you love the idea as a whole, come check out our organization!
You can help keep our longest and most popular project running by donating the things you might otherwise give to for profit corporations like Goodwill. Check below for the types of items that we regularly accept as donations.
-
We take all types of clothing, but we usually ask for in season clothing since our storage is limited. We give clothing to all sorts of folks, so we accept anything from sleepwear, gym wear, and other lounge wear, to baby clothing and accessories, to suits, office attire, semi-formal and formal wear (including formal dresses and suits.) The only thing we ask you not donate is used underwear, holey socks, or clothing that is so stained/full of holes/worn out that it won’t be much use to another person. As of right now, we have no way to recycle those materials.
We ask that all donations be laundered to the best of your ability. We understand that pet hair and other debris can be fully removed with ease and will accept donations that have these things in small amounts. -
We accept a multitude of house wears. We’re generally looking for things like curtains, bedding, table cloths/runners, place mats, and any other household textiles. We don’t currently have the ability to take large rugs, but can accept smaller area rugs as long as they are clean.
We can take household accessories such as utensils, bathroom accessories, laundry baskets, tubs, containers, decorations, candles, cleaning supplies, dishes and other similar items.
We also accept small appliances like toasters, blenders, small microwaves, coffee makers, and other similar things. If you have anything larger than the items listed above, please contact us ahead of time to see if we are able to take it. -
We love giving books new homes! While we have no strict rules on what we will or won’t take when it comes to books, we’ve noticed that certain types of books tend to go faster than others. So if you have any political science, history (fiction or non-fiction), fantasy, sci-fi, children’s literature or pre-teen/teen literature, we’d love to take them off your hands! We will accept other books, but these are the books that our patrons seem to go for the most.
-
Due to a lack of storage space as well as a lack of transportation, we cannot currently take most furniture. However, we can accept things such as small shelves, foldable/trasportable furniture, small chairs, foot stools, side tables, etc. If our circumstances change in the future so that we’re able to accept larger items, we’ll be sure to let folks know!
-
We accept almost all shelf stable foods. We ask that you do not donate things that are severely out of date (more than a couple months), opened, has severely damaged packaging (if you can’t be sure what the state of the product inside is, neither can we), or clearly spoiled in any way.
From time to time, we also accept fresh foods. We will generally only accept these foods immediately ahead of a free store. If you have fresh foods that you would like to donate but don’t know if we have an upcoming free store, please contact us to see what we can do to make sure that the food gets to those who need it.
We especially welcome foods for specific dietary needs (gluten free, halal, kosher, low carb, no sugar, etc.) as we know that many of our disabled and chronically ill community members find themselves in need of these foods and aren’t able to afford the drastically inflated prices. While the capitalist society at large would like to ignore those who can’t afford inflated grocery prices, we here at Syracuse DSA believe that everyone should be able to have what their body needs.
